What Nammásj means

“Nameless”

In Sámi tradition, this mountain was so sacred that its name was never spoken. Kept silent for so long, it was lost. The expedition was born from that story.

By the way, it’s pronounced a bit like “nah-mash”. Everyone trips over it the first time, us included.

The project

Cultivate wonder, through art.

We believe we look after what fills us with wonder. Moufid is a polar explorer. At the end of winter, he is taking four artists to one of the wildest corners of Europe, far from what usually inspires them.

They will spend about nine days there, then tell what they bring back, each with their own tools: the film camera, the stills camera, the pencil, the cello and the voice. And share it as widely as possible, so that the wonder also reaches those who will never go there.

For a destination, we chose a sacred mountain, so remote and so revered that its name ended up being lost. It intrigues us, and it humbles us.

If you feel the same, come and do it with us.

The expedition

On skis through the Sarek

Late winter, in the heart of the Sarek: boreal forest, tundra, frozen lakes, reindeer and ptarmigan. We will have to learn to pull a pulka, live with the cold, and take whatever the Arctic is willing to show us.

Where art comes in

One landscape, four ways of seeing

We come from very different artistic worlds, but we have all created from cities, festivals, places full of people. Never from somewhere this wild.

Up there, the slightest sound takes up space: the wind, the snow squeaking under the skis, the tent fabric flapping at night. And between two gusts, a silence we never hear at home. Juliette is going with her ears wide open.

With Nammásj, we are looking for inspiration where we have never looked before. We will see what comes of it.
